Important: If you select a page count (e.g. 40 pages), you cannot delete pages to go below that minimum. For example, if you select 40 pages but want 36, you’ll need to start with 20 pages and then add the spreads you need.
Hardcover & Softcover Photo Books—What’s the Difference?
Hardcover vs Softcover
Hardcover photobooks are built to last. The cover is made from 200gsm silk paper wrapped around 2.25mm grey board, forming a rigid cover and spine. Each hardcover is finished with a gloss lamination for durability and a premium look.
Softcover photobooks are lighter and more flexible. They use a 250gsm silk cover, also gloss laminated, for a sleek finish. Softcover is ideal if you want a slimmer, lighter book.
Both options use 170gsm gloss paper for the inside pages, ensuring bright, vibrant photo reproduction with a smooth feel.
What does GSM mean?
GSM stands for grams per square metre and measures paper weight (and perceived thickness). Higher GSM generally feels thicker and stiffer:
- 170gsm gloss – inner pages; thicker than typical glossy book paper with a smooth, shiny finish.
- 200gsm silk – hardcover wrap material.
- 250gsm silk – softcover single-piece cover.
Gloss Paper & Gloss Lamination
Gloss paper has a shiny surface that enhances colour and detail — exactly what it sounds like: glossy.
Gloss lamination is a protective glossy film applied to the cover. It adds shine and is fairly resistant to marking and light handling scratches, helping your book stay looking new for longer.

How fast is delivery?
Our photobooks are usually produced within 2 working days and shipped with Standard or Express UK delivery. Weekend delivery options are also available.
What image formats can I upload?
Picsme accepts uploads in JPG or PNG format for best results.
What is a spread?
A spread is two facing pages (left + right). When you add one spread, you add two pages. Spreads are added up to a maximum of 200 pages per book.
Can I reduce my page count after choosing it?
No. If you select, for example, a 40-page book, you cannot delete pages to go below 40. Choose 20 pages and add spreads if you need a specific lower number.
What’s the best size for a cheap photo book?
For great value, choose an A5 softcover photo book from £4.19. Prefer larger images? Pick an A4 photo book or square photo book for a more premium look while still keeping costs low.
Can I add more pages to my photo book later?
Yes — start at 20 pages and add pages in spreads (two pages at a time) up to 200. A5 spreads cost £0.28; A4 & Square spreads cost £0.35.
